Lord of the Rings tour! This is probably the nerdiest thing I've done in years but I enjoyed the heck out of it. I just started re-reading the trilogy (en espanol for practice) so it was an especially good time to check out a bunch of filming locations for the movies.
Apparently they did principal photography for all three films in one go which took 18 months! A crazy amount of work. Especially because Peter Jackson wanted 30 takes for every shot including the one of Isildur floating down the river. So the stunt guy had to jump in the river 30 times!
We started out with a little bit of real history when we stopped by the Chinese settlement from Otago's gold rush.
I guessed the first scene setting right at the river where Arwen confronts the Nazgul. Even though Peter Jackson would splice shots of different places throughout New Zealand in LOTR. In this scene the lower half of the shot is the river where we are, while the top half is a canyon about 10 km away.
Next is the place where Isildur is ambushed by orcs and betrayed by the ring (in the prologue of Fellowship of the Ring) which I also guessed correctly. Two for two baby!
Next is the Pillars of the Kings which the Fellowship passes through during their river trip. I couldn't guess this one. (2/3) I'm gonna stop keeping track because I didn't get any right in the afternoon.
Taters? What's taters precious?
Nobody in the Shire would believe us Mr. Frodo
And finally, the nerdiest bit! (Yes, it gets better) We get to play with replica weapons!
Featuring my best Isildur impression.
