Coming here for the first time, I wasn't sure what to expect since I only had a little bit to go off of. After landing in Wellington we were greeted by Nicky Hunn, who is housing us for the duration of our time here. She took us the scenic route to her house, which took us along the coast and showed us a lot of the area. The view from her house is incredible and it looks out over the entire city and bay area. Shortly after unpacking our things we went down to practice and jumped right into things, which was a big surprise but helped me get over the jet lag quicker.
Due to problems with our international transfer we were unable to play in the first 2 games while we were here in NZ, but we were training and working out during that time so we were more than ready to go when the time came. During those first two weeks we spent a lot of the time exploring the city, trying to find jobs, trying out different foods, etc. The job hunt has been particularly difficult and there are very few open positions and the ones that open up have close to 100 applications in a short time. While I like the free time that we currently have, it is quite excessive and I hope I can find a job in order to make a little money and have something to do during the day other than workout.
Our first game was an experience I'll never forget, because we had been waiting so long to play and this was the final game of the first set of matches. The colts teams are split into two divisions and Poneke currently was in third place of the second division. The first two teams in the second division get to move up to the first division and the bottom two of the first move down a division. The battle for second place was tightly contested and a lot rode on our first game. Eoin and I were given the opportunity to start in our first game and they expected a lot from the "yanks." Right off of the first kick i sprinted down and absolutely laid into the guy that caught the ball. Shortly after, the team was already flustered and threw a bad pass that Eoin scooped up and took in in for a try. The game then escalated dramatically and the team ended up calling the game at halftime since they had injuries and the score was already 60-0. We went back to the clubhouse and celebrated and I was given man of the match.
